This family of fun and eccentric occasional tables perfectly highlights the diverse characteristics of timber, and how it can be showcased in the design of fine furniture. ‘Mushrooms’ bring together an array of mainly indigenous timbers, where the design relies on the timbers’ natural organic character to bring a simple yet elegant set of tables to life. Each has a solid stem made from olive ash, built by stack laminating. This reveals an unusual amount of smooth end grain, giving purpose and contrast to the textured grooving on the underside of the table tops.

‘I first met Ed at a Sussex Guild event at Michelham Priory, where I fell immediately for his incredible work. After a coffee and a cake, my wife and I had decided to buy Volumptuous, an amazing sideboard made of oak with exotic lumps that gave it its name. It makes me smile whenever I look at it. Having caught Ed’s furniture bug, I decided to commission him to make “mushrooms” a set of unusual occasional tables. Initially I met him at his workshop to discuss the idea in principle, followed by a coffee at my place to look at designs and wood samples. He is totally passionate and obsessive about detail and quality, but at the same time very easy to talk to and for me most importantly grounded and down to earth. I was impressed with his ability to transform what I had in my head into something that I now have in my living room, which is functional and beautiful. I will ask to Ed to make more furniture for me. I enjoy the product and the process and would recommend anyone who wants a special experience to give it a go!’
